Judicial teams to embark on foreign study tour

This is considered as a good step to set a new law on mariage. The minimum age can be considered if the girl has come up to take a responsibility to look after a family. More over the boy should be minimum 22 years of age and there should not be a gap of more than 10 years between the boy and the girl.

It's a step in the right direction. This will give Saudi jurists the necessary exposure to enable them to see and rectify the drawbacks prevailing in their own judicial system. This is not to say that the western judicial system is flawless or superior to Saudi judicial system. But by comparing and contrasting the two systems, the Saudi jurists will be better able to weigh the pluses and minuses of their system. As far as the minimun age for consent to marriage is conerned, I think 18 is a suitable age.

ask me ill tell them what to do if want respect and security. it must calculate a woman's basic educational requirements. what kind of activities can she be involved with until she wants to marry. marriage=happiness, when is the right time for happiness. what level of education does she need to produce children for the future. if she marries young then she would probably end up with 5 to 9 children. agian how men precieve women is the ultimate. shariah is ultimately education for balance and security according to worries. etc etc etc etc etc ... saudis must research surrounding countries and understand role of female in and out of home. it is a good initiative to start. i believe as soon as she finishes college at 21 she should engaged then obtain higher education. inshallah producing teh right brains within priniples of islam.

Why does Saudi Arabia have to look to other countries to formulate its own laws? Also, how are these rules going to change while still not undermining Sharia; the principles of Sharia are set and cannot be more strict or more lenient?

Riyadh: Saudi Arabia will soon announce a new law to deal with the problem of underage marriage, according to Shaikh Saleh Bin Humaid, chairman of the Saudi Supreme Judiciary Council.
"We will take the best from judicial systems across the world," he said, while reaffirming that this would not undermine the fundamentals of Islamic Shariah law, which forms the basis of the kingdom's judiciary.
High ranking Saudi judicial delegations would soon embark on a wide tour of several European and Arab countries, Bin Humaid told Gulf News yesterday.
"The delegations will examine closely the salient features of the judicial systems prevalent in those countries. We will adopt many provisions in these systems, in line with the basic Shariah principles," he said.
Bin Humaid, the top figure in Saudi judiciary, also underscored the independent and impartial nature of the kingdom's judiciary.
"We have set up specialised courts to deal with cases related with commercial disputes, labour problems, criminal and civil matters and traffic issues," he said while unveiling the salient features of the project of King Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz, for making the judiciary more effective and transparent.
Meanwhile, a number of Saudi and foreign legal experts told Gulf News that the most important steps taken by the government of Saudi Arabia to improve the judicial system was the project for improving the efficiency and competence of judges in quantity and quality, and introduction of highly advanced technologies in expediting the judicial process.
Noted Saudi lawyer Naif Al Otaibi said that the kingdom's drive to overhaul the judicial system is one of the landmark projects being implemented by the government.
On his part, Rafa'at Basyuni, an Egyptian legal consultant, underlined the need for taking advantage of all the regulations pertaining to human rights while overhauling the kingdom's judicial system.
Have your say
Do you think this a good initiative? What should the minimum age of consent to marriage be? What effect will this have on the society in Saudi Arabia? Tell us.
