Riyadh: Saudi Arabia should sever diplomatic ties with Iran after its "continuous involvement" in acts to undermine the GCC, according to political analysts speaking to Gulf News.

Recently a plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to the United States, Adel Al Jubair was discovered and blamed on Iran. Iran's relations with GCC and the rest of the world are at stake following the discovery of the plot, according to Mohammad Al Hamdan, professor of international relations at Riyadh's King Saud University.

"For the first time the US has declared it was weighing all options, including force," he said.

Sultan Al Thaqfi, a Saudi political analyst says it's time to sever diplomatic ties with Iran. He recalled several incidents of Iranian pilgrims stirring up trouble in Makkah during pilgramages.

Iran also had a hand in the Al Khobar blast which claimed the lives of 19 people and injured 372, and the recent rioting in Awamiyah, in Saudi's Eastern province of Qateef, according to Al Thaqfi.

"Iran is worried about losing its only Arab ally, Syria, because of domestic turmoil there, so it is creating havoc in other countries," Hassan Al Ahdal, political analyst, told Gulf News.

"Targeting Saudi diplomats is one way to weaken Saudi diplomacy as well as fomenting civil disturbances in GCC states, most notably, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain," he said.
