Riyadh: Saudi police have arrested 22 members of a criminal gang who are believed to have specialised in house break-ins.

The Saudi Ministry of Interior, in a statement released on Wednesday, declared that the Riyadh police and Criminal Investigation Unit managed to arrest the gang members after a major investigation.

Riyadh police responded to various reports from residents in the northern and eastern parts of the country’s capital and launched an investigative to monitor the group’s whereabouts and movements.

Acting on that information and on gathering evidence, the police arrested 22 people — including four women — from Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Egypt, Morocco and Indonesia. According to the Saudi Ministry of Interior, preliminary questioning revealed that the gang carried out 20 burglaries, gathering a total of goods worth 2 million Saudi riyals (Dh1.96 million.) The gang targeted large houses in wealthy neighbourhoods stealing cash, jewellery and electronic devices. Authorities are still carrying out further investigations into the matter to expose the full extent of the gang members’ crimes so that they can be referred to the designated judicial court.
