Manama: A prison in Saudi Arabia has celebrated the wedding of an inmate with great fanfare, setting an elaborately decorated area for the celebrations and providing all facilities.

The management of the prison in Buraydah, the capital of Al Qasem Region in north central Saudi Arabia, also provided food and drinks for the families, and friends of the inmate and his bride.

The celebrations, in line with the traditions in the kingdom, were not mixed.

Buraydah has a tradition of holding marriage ceremonies for inmates, keeping up with directives from the interior ministry to provide care and assistance for detainees, local news site Sabq reported on Sunday.

In October, a similar wedding ceremony was held in the prison and the management did their best to ensure the setting and atmosphere was at least as attractive as the celebratory mood in public wedding halls.

Under Saudi prison regulations, inmates have the right to get married and special family rooms have been set up for the purpose in most Saudi prisons.

Jail officials say the marriage of prisoners has several benefits for them, and speeds up their reformation process and their rehabilitation.

They insist prisoners form a segment of the Saudi society and that they should be helped into reintegrating it.
