Manama: The policeman who was run over last week in Kuwait by a supporter of Taliban is a Saudi national, his father said.

Turki Mohammad Al Enezi was killed as he was patrolling an area in front of the Dasman Palace in the capital Kuwait City as the country was celebrating its independence and liberation days. Several other policemen were injured in the attack on the security point.

The driver, a Kuwaiti national identified as Abdul Aziz Al Shamlan, was arrested and he is still being questioned over the killing and his links with Daesh.

“I am proud of my son and of his dedication and commitment,” Mohammad Al Enezi, the victim’s father, said.

“He had been working as a policeman in Kuwait for seven years and he died from the injuries he suffered during the attack. His mother is a Kuwaiti national and he is married and has three children. He drove daily to work from their home at the Saudi-Kuwaiti border,” the father said, quoted by Saudi daily Okaz.

According to Okaz, around 2,800 Saudis work in Kuwait, mainly in the education, security and health sectors.

The close family and social ties and the proximity of Saudi towns are a major motivator for Saudis to take up jobs in Kuwait.

During his questioning, Al Shamlan said that he had planned the attack and that his two brothers had encouraged him to carry it out, sources told Kuwaiti daily Al Rai.

“I did what I had to do and I killed them,” he reportedly said. “They were policemen and worked for the security of the state and therefore it was a duty to kill them.”

Al Shamlan said that he supported Taliban “in words and deeds” and that his attack on the policemen was consistent with the organisation’s ideology.

“What was meant to happen happened and I killed them,” he said,

The sources added that the public prosecution called the attacker’s brothers to question them and confront them with their brother’s claims about their encouragement to carry out the attack.
