Dubai: Dreaming of getting a doctorate? A PhD in dreams could soon become a reality with the launch of a new Saudi academy, which will also offer bachelor's and master's degrees.

Yousuf Al Harthi, a well-known Saudi scholar, plans to start an institute offering courses in explaining dreams and visions, Al Hayat newspaper reported on Sunday. He already has students following his teachings online and on Facebook.

Interpreting dreams is like counselling, Al Harthi said, adding that it is one aspect of Sharia and it can be taught.

Dream interpretation is popular among many Muslims and is mentioned in the Quran, particularly in the Surat of Yousuf.

Seventh century scholar Mohammad Bin Sirin wrote a manual to decipher dreams. More than 700 years later, it is still a best seller in the Arab world.

Al Harthy's dreams of setting up a satellite channel have been dashed after the financier pulled out of the project.
