Manama: A Saudi groom cancelled his wedding ceremony at the last minute after the bride's father insisted on getting half of his daughter's salary as long as he lived and on writing a clause to the effect in the marriage contract.

The request by the father was made as the groom was about to sign the marriage contract at the ceremony in Jazan in the south of Saudi Arabia.

Attempts failed by the 29-year-old groom to assure the father that his daughter could give him all her salary, but without inserting a clause in the contract, the El Bashayer news portal reported on Wednesday.

A massive intervention from religious figures and guests at the celebration also failed to make the father change his mind.

The groom thanked the guests for coming to the reception, invited them to have dinner, but told them that the marriage was cancelled, the report said.

According to El Bashayer, the father sat silently and refused to join the guests for the dinner while the bride had a nervous breakdown and tore the wedding dress.

As usual, searching for the odd news and make it the main news for your saudi news. There is so much good news in saudi - how come if you can write about peoples personal things and make it mainstream news, and make an entire community look like that, that you cant write about the charitable things they do, all the little good things, just like you write about all the little bad things.

If the father had refused to marry off the daughter some one else like brother or uncle should have taken up the task. Such a selfish father has no right on the daughter.i really feel sorry for the bride and the groom.

I think this is happend just because of EGO problem between two parties i.e bride father and groom. This ego is a major problem among people. I saw & heard so many break ups in ralationships, friendships, businesses happened just because of this EGO problem. This problem is there even for minor things i.e when you are driving, walking in the malls etc. This can be avoided by proper counselling to the citizens with peace of mind, there is no other way & legal actions are not going to solve the problem permanently. Government should arrange for proper counselling for its citizens, monthly gathering & make different groups - age wise, man & women etc. This can be resolved.

How could a father like this broke the heart of his daughter. What if the bride become depressed and get insane because of the embarrassment he had caused her. Such a shame to his family!!!
