Manama: A Saudi man has been spared punishment lashes after he insisted that his wife, who had filed a lawsuit against him, whip him.

The court in Saudi Arabia ruled that the defendant be given 30 lashes for abusing his wife and apologise to her for his bad behaviour.

However, following the verdict, the man, while presenting his apologies to his wife at the court, said that she should be the one to use the whip to give him the 30 lashes, Kuwaiti daily Al Anba reported on Sunday, citing Saudi judicial sources.

“You should be the one to whip me,” the man told his wife. “And even if you exceed the 30 lashes ordered by the court, I will accept your decision because the most important thing is that you are happy,” he said.

The man reportedly pleaded afterwards with his wife to forgive him, prompting her to tell the court that she pardoned him.

She explained that she accepted his pledge to treat her well and to be good with her, particularly that they have children together, the daily said.
