Muscat: A four-year-old Saudi girl was injured in Musandam on Saturday when bullets from celebratory gunfire landed on her head.

The gunfire came from a nearby wedding.

The girl, Zainab, is in stable condition at the Sohar hospital.

She was playing with her brother in the yard of the hotel, according to the Royal Oman Police (ROP) who spoke to Gulf News.

The wedding was taking place approximately two kilometres away from the Diba hotel.

Police arrested the man responsible for firing the weapon.

Under Omani law, weapons are banned in public places, with the exception of some light guns after obtaining permission from the ROP.

Fines for firing weapons in the air without proper licences are 200 rials. Offenders are fined 300 rials if they fire weapons on Eid or wedding occasions.

Two Omanis were killed last year after they accidently shot themselves with conventional guns.

Police have launched a campaign to register all unlicensed weapons and conventional guns.
