Manama: A first-grade student who died of head injuries after falling from the second-floor staircase of his school was laid to rest in an emotional burial in Madinah in western Saudi Arabia.

A surveillance camera reportedly showed Ahmad Norkin, a Kazakh national, greet a teacher, then sprint with some classmates and climb the low stair handrails, Saudi daily Al Riyadh reported on Wednesday.

Another student tried to dissuade him and get him to move away, but Ahmad returned to the rails and in a tragic accident fell hard on the ground, two storeys below.

A spokesperson for the education district in Madinah confirmed the accident.

“We received a call informing us about the tragic accident that occurred on Sunday at around 11:43 at the end of the school day at the Mohammad Bin Ali Al Qushairi for the Memorization of the Holy Quran attached to the Hassan Bin Thabet Elementary School,” Omar Barnawi said. “The school administration promptly called the Red Crescent and the student was transported to hospital in the presence of his father. However, the student passed away minutes after his arrival. The Department of Follow-Up, Security and Safety and other concerned authorities are investigating the incident.”
