Manama: A Saudi border security patrol has arrested a Sudanese man and a married Arab woman as they were attempting to sneak into Yemen where they planned to get married.

“The patrol servicemen saw the couple in the border zone between Saudi Arabia and Yemen and wanted to check their documents,” Abdullah Bin Mahfoodh, the spokesperson for the border security in Jazan, said.

“The man and woman claimed they were Saudi nationals, members of a tribe that lived in the region. However, as the servicemen pressed further, they admitted that they had taken a bus from Riyadh to Jazan and that they pretended they were married by using a forged document,” the spokesperson said, quoted by local daily Al Sharq on Thursday.

A security check using their fingerprints revealed that the man was a Sudanese national and that the woman was an Arab citizen who was already married and lived in the Eastern Province coastal city of Dammam.

The man said that he was taking the woman to Yemen where he wanted to marry her, the spokesperson added.

The border between Saudi Arabia and Yemen is about 1,800 kilometres long.
