Manama: Drugs worth 2.5 billion riyals have been seized by Saudi authorities in the last five months.

The hauls have also resulted in the arrest of 991 traffickers and the numbers included 654 foreigners from 33 countries and 337 Saudi nationals, the police said.

Nineteen policemen were injured during the anti-drug campaigns while three traffickers were killed and 11 smugglers and pushers were wounded, the figures released by the Saudi police on Wednesday indicated.

The police said that they seized close to 14.5 million riyals, 350 machine guns, 136 pistols, 29 rifles and 7,580 bullets as they conducted their relentless campaigns.

Heroin, hashish, amphetamine, cocaine and pills were also seized in the five months that included Ramadan.

Saudi Arabia has been actively involved in a relentless fight to curb the possession and use of narcotics that included tough legal procedures against those found guilty of promoting, selling or using them.

The fight is part of a larger campaign against terrorism, arms smuggling, money laundering and other transnational organised crimes.
