Manama: A Saudi father has shocked a young man asking to marry his daughter by demanding a copy of his passport.

The father said that he wanted to see whether the marriage aspirant had been to “morally corrupt countries”, arguing that he wanted to protect his daughter from “imported negative ideas that would eventually cause the couple to divorce.”

The man’s five other daughters were married after he checked that the men who wanted to marry them were not “morally corrupt by foreign practices”, Saudi Arabic daily Okaz reported.

Attempts by the aspirant’s father to convince the father of the prospective bride that his son was dignified and did not engage in immoral activities even when he went abroad failed to make him change his mind.

According to the daily, the girl’s father had invariably rejected all aspirants who disputed his unusual passport condition to scrutinise their travels or who could not explain to his satisfaction the reasons for their trips abroad.

The report did not name the “morally corrupt countries.”
