The Arab League letter to Labour MPs - The Sun

Dubai: The Arab League has decided to boycott a British Labour party reception after the party refused to allow Saudi Arabia and Sudan to attend.

The Arab League wrote to all Labour MPs earlier last week announcing its decision to cancel its annual reception and buffet dinner at the party’s conference, British daily The Sun reported.

“The Council of Arab Ambassadors has taken the decision to cancel its annual reception and buffet dinner due to be held during the Labour Party conference in Brighton on 26 September 2017,” the Arab league wrote in its letter dated September 13.

“Our Council has decided to refrain from attending the Labour Party Conference this year due to the rejection of both the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s and the Republic of Sudan’s applications to attend it.”

The party cited alleged abuses to explain its stance, but The Sun referred to the decision as “humiliation for Labour Pary leader Jeremy Corbyn.”

The party was accused of double standards as members of party leader Jeremy Corbyn’s front bench will attend a ‘Venezuela Solidarity Campaign’ event at the Labour conference, according to The Sun.

The daily said that Corbyn has faced criticism for his failure to condemn the Venezuelan regime following suppression of protests.
