Manama: Saudi Arabia has arrested 49 people suspected of links with the terror attack at a Shiite gathering in Sehat earlier this month.

Five people, including one woman, were killed in the attack on October 16 by a man in his 20s who opened fire at passersby near Al Kawthar Mosque in Sehat in Eastern Saudi Arabia.

Reports said the killer who was shot by the police had driven to the area in a taxi he had taken by force from its Pakistani driver in the neighbouring city of Dammam.

The ministry said that with the arrest of the suspects linked to the attack, the number of people held in cases of terror has reached 4,947.

Figures released by the ministry indicate the presence of 18 Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) citizens, aside from the Saudis.

According to the figures, most of the GCC detainees are Bahrainis, and the list also includes three Qataris, two Emiratis, one Kuwaiti and one Omani.

Saudi detainees top the overall list with 4,193 suspects, which also includes 315 Yemenis, 41 Pakistanis and seven Iraqis, the ministry said.
