Manama: A Qatari anti-human trafficking agency is holding regular lectures in several languages to promote awareness among low-income workers about their rights and to help prevent their exploitation.
The Qatar Foundation for Combating Human Trafficking (QFCHT), which has recently set up a cell in the workers' hospital in the Industrial Area, is mainly aiming to assist workers who are victims of ‘free visa' trade or those who are brought into the country by ‘fake' companies, Qatari daily The Peninsula reported on Wednesday.
Workers are also encouraged to file complaints with the cell if their passports are kept by their sponsors or they are not issued exit permits to travel home.
The lectures to help the workers prevent or deal with malpractices are held in Hindi, Arabic, Tamil and English.
Despite official and NGOs efforts, Qatar labour laws are often flouted by companies and unscrupulous middle agents, resulting in several pay and living issues for thousands of unskilled labourers, mainly from Asian countries.
