Manama: Qatar students will next year start learning scientific English in the third grade under new education directives. The aim is to enhance the students' aptitudes in understanding, acquiring and using technical words and expressions related to maths and sciences, local Arabic daily Al Sherooq reported on Thursday.

The scientific English courses will be in addition to the regular English classes. The students in independent schools will take scientific English until the 10th grade. In the 11th and 12th grades, they will take courses in major international standardised tests of English language proficiency, including the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

The listening, reading, writing and speaking proficiency preparation is expected to boost the students' chances to be admitted to prominent universities and colleges that require the exam.
