Manama: The fifth Intel Science Competition Arab World (ISC AW), an annual Pan Arab Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) competition for students in grades 9 to 12, will be held in Qatar on November 9 to 11, organisers have said.

More than 100 students from 11 countries across the Middle East and North Africa will compete for prizes in the event hosted in the Qatari capital Doha for the first time, Intel Corporation, the Research and Development Division of Qatar Foundation for Education, Science and Community Development (QF R&D), and Qatar’s Supreme Education Council, (SEC) added.

Qatari judges and international experts will appraise 89 projects in a range of diverse categories, including energy, environmental science, engineering, computer science, biochemistry, behavioural and social sciences.

Students qualified for the ISC AW by winning their home country’s science competition and now — set to meet and compete with their international peers — will be presenting their projects and competing in Arabic, with the aim of building confidence and experience of working with the language in the field of science.

“Scientific expertise and innovation is fundamental to advancing society and developing knowledge-based economies,” Dr Ayman Bassil, Head of Research Training at QF R&D, said. “As the ISC AW is helping to foster the next generation of scientists in Qatar and the rest of the Arab world, it is firmly in line with the Qatar Foundation’s role in contributing to human development nationally, regionally, and internationally.”

According to Taha Khalifa, Intel General Manager, Mena region, “the world needs more scientists, makers and entrepreneurs to create jobs, drive economic growth and solve pressing global challenges.”

“Intel believes that young people are the key to innovation, and we hope that these winners inspire more students to get involved in science, technology, engineering and maths; the very foundation for creativity,” he said.
