Manama: Saudi Arabia’s Grand Mufti Shaikh Abdul Aziz Al Shaikh has called on the Muslim Brotherhood to distance itself from fanaticism and extremism and to adhere to the words of God and to the traditions of His Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).

“Regarding the fatwas issued by some members of the Muslim Brotherhood against Saudi Arabia and its role in the region following the recent statements by some countries, Muslims must be pious with God and there must be no exaggeration or fallacies. There must be a clear approach to abiding by the Book of God and anyone who calls for goodness is doing the rightful thing,” he said, quoted by Al Hayat daily.

The mufti called on the Muslim Brotherhood and other groups not to be fanatic about views professed by some people and to adhere to the values promoted by the Quran and Sunnah.

“The accusations are wrong. Saudi Arabia is a Muslim country in the service of Islam and is looking after Muslims. It is a peaceful country that does not interfere in the domestic affairs of any other country.”

The mufti expressed his backing of measures taken by Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates vis-a-vis Qatar over its funding of terrorism.

Such measures “benefit all Muslims and the future of the Qataris themselves”, he said.

Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Egypt have designated the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist group.

After the Arab Spring protests, the Muslim Brotherhood won elections in Tunisia, Libya and Egypt before their fortunes were reversed.
