Manama: Qatar is moving closer to implementing new driving learning rules that will do away with the sponsor's no-objection letter.

The decision that allows expatriates to join a driving school without requiring them to produce a no-objection letter from the sponsor starting August 1 has been welcomed, Qatari daily The Peninsula reported.

Along with the application, the candidates will only have to submit a copy of the valid ID card and an eye test certificate. Currently, the sponsors' letter is mandatory, which has made it difficult for many expatriates, especially those working in the unorganised sector to take driving lessons in a school.

The Traffic Department is also working on a project to link up with all the driving schools electronically in a move that will make the procedures for issuance of the driving licence faster and easier, the daily said.
