Manama: A new Guinness World Record attempt for the largest Monopoly game board will be a major attraction of the 2011 Doha Trade Fair (DTF), which begins on June 4.

The Monopoly game board must measure more than 144 square metres to beat the current world record held in Germany. The board will be on display in a specially constructed "Fun Zone" and DTF partner q.media events will kick off the attempt with a roll of the dice from 4pm onwards.

A representative from Guinness World Records Limited will adjudicate the game which will be played on a UK Parker Brothers Monopoly board.

The official game rules of Monopoly will apply and functional game pieces including dice, houses and hotels, all built to size will be used. The participants from q.media events will stand in for the playing tokens.

Guinness World Records adjudications manager Talal Omar expressed hope that Qatar would make the new record, Qatari daily Gulf Times reported on Thursday.

After the attempt at breaking the world record, the board game will be open to active Facebook fans to try their expertise at becoming the ultimate property landlord.

A series of Monopoly games will be held from June 5 to 13. Teams of two will compete against each other on the exclusive Monopoly board to gain as many points as possible.

Monopoly points are gained by owning properties and charging other teams rent when landing on them. Properties can be owned by landing on the property and answering the given question correctly. Question topics will cover geography, sport, art and culture, history and general knowledge.

Eligibility to play the Monopoly game will be based on the level of interactivity as a fan on the Doha Trade Fair Facebook page.
