Manama: A competition to prepare students for a meticulous international assessment has been launched in Qatar.

Students from over 100 schools across the country, including independent, private and Arab community schools, have started competing in the Electronic Scientific Competition.

The competition, scheduled to continue throughout the week, aims to prepare students for the Programme for International Student Assessment (Pisa), to be applied electronically in Qatar for the first time in 2015.

Pisa evaluates the performance of students in Mathematics, Science and Reading and ranks them among members of the Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), as well as other countries that participate in the assessment.

The top six schools will emerge as winners from the challenge.

Hamda Al Sulaiti, the director of the Evaluation Institute in the Supreme Education Council, said that the competition “encourages students to invest their best in these tests and raise the standards of their school to meet international levels needed to excel in global assessments.”

“All winning schools will be honoured at a special ceremony, and the Evaluation Institute will utilise the results to continue shaping the SEC’s strategy to prepare students for international standardised assessments,” she said.
