Manama: Qatar's state-run Zakat Fund has allocated QR3.81 million ($1.043 million or around Dh3.8 million) for its daily Iftar programme this year.
Muslims this year are expected to celebrate the month during which they fast from sunrise until sunset starting August 11, depending on the sighting of the crescent, based on the lunar calendar. The Fund said that it planned to provide iftar food to 200,000 people.
Mohamed Judai, Zakat Fund’s acting director of Projects Department, told the media in Doha said that eight locations had been designated for the Iftar gatherings.
Large tents will be set up for the purpose in localities including in Ummghuwailina, Old Airport, Asmakh, Bin Omran, Mansura, Meseimeer, Qatar Sports Club and Al Wakra. Each tent can accommodate around 1,000 people, he said, quoted by Qatari daily The Peninsula.
Judai said that the safety measures taken to avoid incidents include using flame-resistant tents equipped with air-conditioning systems.
The official said that the food served would be of high quality and that Zakat Fund had signed contracts with leading restaurants.
"Inspectors from the Fund will visit the tents and restaurants regularly to ensure that quality is not compromised," he said.
