Manama: Qatar's Public Prosecution plans to go fully online and refer all the cases to the court electronically.

Preliminary investigations conducted by the prosecution in criminal cases will also be forwarded to the courts online and the confidentiality of the reports will be assured through the special passwords used by authorised court officials to access them.

Going fully online will forward the cases to the courts promptly saving a lot of time and effort, Qatari daily The Peninsula reported on Monday.

The new system will also make sure that the names of the witnesses, particularly in criminal cases, are kept confidential and are not leaked, a possibility which exists when prosecution-court communication is through paperwork.

"We are currently busy training our staff in online operations," Saud Bin Abdullah Al Shafi, a senior prosecution official, said. "This would give the prosecution an opportunity to employ more nationals since there is no dearth of locals who specialise in information technology (IT)."

The prosecution went online in 2008 in handling cheques-related cases and it is already electronically linked to various public security centres and to the courts, he said.
