Manama: The Bahraini fisherman at the centre of a bitter standoff between Manama and Doha has been released from prison, his lawyer has said.
However, Adel Al Taweel, 37, will remain at a hotel in Doha until the Qatari authorities decide on his fate later this month.
Al Taweel was shot last month as he strayed into Qatar waters while on a fishing trip. The Qatari coastguard said that they were forced to shoot after he ignored warnings to leave the area.
He was taken to hospital in Doha and kept there despite attempts by Bahrain to repatriate him.
The standoff, one of the worst between Bahrain and Qatar since the two countries resolved a border dispute in 2001, escalated among calls by Manama to allow all Bahrain-based fishermen detained by Qatar to go home.
Qatar insisted on putting them on trial for entering the country illegally and for resisting arrest in some of the cases.
