High fees turning tuition into nightmares for parents in Qatar
Around 40 per cent of Qatar's total student population take extra lessons to revise for the exams

Manama Parents in Qatar are spending an average of 8,000 Qatari riyals ($2,200) on private tuition per child ahead of the end of semester exams.
"A parent pays around 14,000 riyals ($3,850) to prepare an international school child for the exams and 3,000 riyals ($824) for a student who attends an Arab private school," local Arabic daily Al Raya reported on Thursday, citing a local study.
Around 40 per cent of Qatar's total student population take extra lessons to revise for the exams, opening up a huge market for home-based private tuitions and resulting in more expenses for parents and lucrative opportunities for teachers.
Parents said that a single session costs up to 200 riyals ($55).
English dominates with 67 per cent of the courses, followed by Mathematics with 61 per cent. Religious studies are at the bottom of the private courses with only 12 per cent of students taking them, just below Biology with 15 per cent, the study by the Doha-based Social and Economic Survey Research Institute, said.
