Manama: A work plan on combating poverty in the Middle East and North Africa (Mena) region through the application of decent work strategies will be presented to the United Nations early next year.
The Doha Forum for Decent Work and Poverty Reduction, hosted by the Doha International Institute for Family Studies and Development (DIIFSD), and organised in cooperation with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and the International Training Centre for the ILO (ITC/ILO), made the announcement following two days of deliberation in breakout and plenary sessions in the Qatari capital.
The forum is aimed at making a tangible impact to the employment and poverty situation in the region, Qatar Tribune daily reported on Thursday.
"We have addressed the problem of youth unemployment in the region, the integration of women into the workforce and how to reconcile work and family responsibilities," Amina Mesdoua, director of the Family Policy Division, said. "In this way, the Doha Forum has helped achieve a better understanding of Decent Work, its impact on the Millennium Development Goals and poverty reduction in particular."
According to Mary Kawar, Senior Advisor on Skills and Employability for the ILO Regional Office of the Arab States, the discussion instigated in Doha must continue and action must be taken in light of the recommendations provided by the International Labour Organisation and the UN experts present at the forum.
DIIFSD's Doha Forum for Decent Work and Poverty Reduction works towards the commitment set forth in the Millennium Development Goals.
It is aligned with Qatar Foundation for Science, Education and Community Development's (QF) mission to address the immediate needs of the community as well as the unlocking of human potential.
