Manama: A concert by a popular Filipino singer, as well as a singing contest, will be held to help raise funds to build a school campus for the Philippine School Doha (PSD) in Qatar.
The fundraising drive is the initiative of the school's Parents-Teachers Association (PTA) to raise 30 million riyals (Dh30.24 million) for the campus in Abu Hamour. The campaign was set-up after Qatar donated a 10,000 square metre area for the project.
Delfin Montenegro, PTA president, said they wanted to pursue the ambitious initiative to fast track the much needed new school building.
"Our mission for this big project is to build it within two to three years," Montenegro told the Qatari daily, The Peninsula.
The campus will allow schoolchildren to enjoy spacious school grounds for their outdoor activities and school buildings that can accommodate at least 5,000 students.
Aside from the concert and the planned sequel of the successful PSD Idol contest, the PTA is also planning other major events to raise the necessary funds.
The PTA will also coordinate with other major organisations in the Filipino community to help them with the fundraising drive. "We are more than committed to realise this big project," Montenegro said.
The Filipino community is one of the largest in Qatar.
Manila and Doha last year sealed a bilateral labour agreement that further opened up Qatar's labour market to Filipino workers, providing them with around 300,000 new jobs.
Qatar has been heavily investing in public infrastructures and requires a large number of workers in the construction sector.
