Manama: Qatar's Shaikh Thani Bin Abdullah Foundation for Humanitarian Services (RAF) is planning to set up a charitable fund to be named after Ali Hassan Al Jaber, the cameraman who was killed while covering events in Libya for Al Jazeera Satellite Channel.
Qatar News Agency (QNA) quoted Ayed Bin Dbassan Al Qahtani, RAF director-general, as saying the foundation will allocate QR500,000 (Dh504,283) as an initial amount and the fund will be open to all individuals, institutions or companies.
The foundation is working on fulfilling the legal procedures to formally launch the fund and a formal announcement on its technical and administrative details will be made in the next two days, he said.
Al Qahtani said the proceeds of the fund will be allocated for humanitarian work in Libya and other North African countries, and may in the future be used for urgent and critical cases elsewhere in the world.
Al Jaber was killed in Libya on Saturday and buried on Monday in Doha in the presence of Qatar's Crown Prince Shaikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, and hundreds of mourners, including ministers, senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps and members of the Libyan community in Qatar.
Several international media organisations and human rights groups have condemned the assassination of Al Jaber and demanded legal action.
