Manama: One Bahraini and 50 Asian Bahrain-based fishermen are currently being detained by Qatari authorities after a court ordered the release of a Bahraini and his two Asian companions.

Last month, Manama said that Doha was holding 107 fishermen and asked for their prompt release.

Adel Al Taweel, who was shot by Qatari coastguards for allegedly ignoring warning shots after he strayed into Qatari waters, will have to wait until a court hearing on July 8 to know his fate.

On Monday, Qatar said that nine Bahraini fishermen who had been detained for weeks for entering Qatari waters could go home after paying fines. Last week, eight Bahrainis were also released from police custody. In all cases, the Bahraini embassy in Doha paid the fines that ranged between 200 (Dh1,941) and 1,000 Bahraini dinars.

However, no word was issued about the 50 Bahrain-based Asian fishermen who are still being held in Qatar.

Qatar's Emir Shaikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani on June 13 ordered the release of all Bahraini and Asian fishermen, held on charges of straying into Qatari waters and of all Bahraini boats.
