Doha: Qatar Armed Forces have awarded 25 scholarships for outstanding students enrolling in the newly established Qatar Leadership Academy, the first military institute of this kind in the Gulf region.

Management of the Academy, an all-boys private boarding school and a partnership between Qatar Foundation of Education, Science and Community Development and the Qatar Armed Forces, said here on Wednesday that registrations are open for the next academic year and will continue until March 30.

"Qatar Armed Forces have given us 25 scholarships that will only be awarded to those who are able to meet our high standards when considering applicants for next year." Saif Al Hajiri, Vice-Chair of Qatar Foundation said at a press conference.

The academy has 45 cadets but it hopes to increase to 100 next year. The academy received 600 applications in 2004 but space is limited, he said.

This exclusive institute was established in close cooperation with St John's Northwest Military Academy, founded in 1884 in Wisconsin, USA. The mission of the Academy is to promote personal growth in young men by engaging them in an environment that promotes excellence in academics, leadership, athletics and character to prepare leaders of tomorrow.

"We aim to combine leadership, academic and military elements in the disciplined education of a child so that he will have a choice to either pursue a military career or attend university in Qatar or overseas," said Christine Marzouk, headmistress.

The management said values such as discipline, honour, knowledge, honesty, integrity, are all traits that this academy promises to instil in the students.

There are three stages to admissions, including tests in Arabic, English and Math, an interview and a fitness test. Marzouk said standards are high because programmes are rigorous.

The registration and application process is open to Qatari and non-Qatari nationals from the neighbouring GCC countries aged between 11 and 17 years.

Marzouk added that the Qatar Leadership Academy will be authorised during next year to adopt the International Baccalaureate Diploma Years and Middle Years Programmes.
