Manama: Around two-thirds of Qatar's fatal accidents last year were caused by young people, traffic data indicated.
"Even though the number of deadly accidents went down by 10.6 per cent, the fact that 65.2 per cent of them were caused by young drivers is very worrisome," officials have said, quoted by Arabic daily Al Raya on Thursday
Young people with driving experience of less than three years caused 76.5 per cent of all accidents in the country.
Speed, jumping red lights and mobile texting were the major causes of the accidents that claimed 205 lives.
A recent study on driving in Qatar found that mobile phone users committed more errors and lapses than other drivers and that the average number of drivers' incoming or outgoing calls while driving was 4.28 per day.
Mobile phone users also had a higher number of tickets for not obeying traffic light (45.3 per cent) and for exceeding speed limit (48.2 per cent), according to the study conducted by Dr Abdulbari Bener, from the Department of Medical Statistics and Epidemiology at Hamad Medical Corporation.
