Manama: Around 2,500 Qatar-based Indian nationals, including 154 women, were sent to the deportation centre in 2010, the Indian embassy in Doha said.
Embassy officials told a community meeting that there were currently 94 Indians, including five women, housed at the deportation centre.
Out of the 36 Indians serving sentence in Qatar’s central prison for various offences, five are women.
According to Ambassador Deepa Gopalan Wadhwa ,262 Indian nationals died in Qatar in 2009 and 233 in 2010.
Among the deaths, 29 were in traffic accidents and 23 were at worksites.
The possibility of introducing health awareness campaigns in the community should be explored, the envoy said.
The Indian mission forwarded 432 work-related complaints to the Qatar’s Labour Department in 2010.
Issues raised by community members at the meeting included the granting of exit permits, Qatari daily Gulf Times reported.
A man complained that his sponsor did not get his visa stamped for more than eight months, a fact that deprived him of taking up any employment.
The embassy said it handled in 2010 more than 70,000 consular issues that included the renewal of more than 33,000 passports.
