Workers in Oman stage protest walk over non-payment of wages
Forty-five workers have not been paid salaries and 27 of them came to protest, says worker
Muscat: At least 27 Indian workers from a cleaning company walked over 20 kilometres on Monday to complain to the Manpower Ministry about non-payment of salaries.
"We haven't been paid for the last three months and have no money to eat therefore had to walk that long to ask authorities' intervention," Ajilal Appukutam, a worker who joined the protest, told Gulf News outside the Indian embassy.
He said that the company - New Technical Services and Trading - has cleaning contract with a giant automobile agency in Muscat. "We have stopped our work as we are not paid," he added.
He said that the company's was not paying salaries on the pretext that the automobile company, which has agencies for premier Japanese and Korean cars, had not cleared their bills.
He said that 45 workers have not been paid salaries and 27 of them came to protest. "We first went to the labour department but we could not meet anyone so we have come to the Indian embassy," said Appukutam.
"We have been provided with lunch by the embassy officials but so far we haven't met anyone. We are waiting for present our grievances," he said, adding that he hopes the embassy will intervene and get them their salaries.
