Muscat: Taps have literally gone dry, forcing residents of the Amarat suburb in Muscat to spend hours waiting in queue to fetch water from tankers provided by the authorities.

“Since last Thursday we are without water supply,” Wahida Al Saeedi, a resident of Amarat, told Gulf News. She added that in between water supply resumed for a day but again it has stopped. “We have to queue up to get water,” he said.

Wahida said that the authorities informed them that new development in the area was behind thewater crisis. Muscat Municipality is working on a project to divert rainwater from flooding the Al Nahda Hospital project. Thus, the water pipe line is also modified to accommodate the flood protection plans.

However, Omani news portal Al Balad said that a broken pipe in Wadi Adei area had disrupted the water supply for the last four days in Amarat.

The portal also said that private water tanker owners were charging exorbitant rates and exploiting the situation.
