Muscat: A fire at an under-construction petrol station in Sohar triggered rumours of an arson act late on Thursday night.

“There was a fire at the under construction petrol station but no one was present at the site and no one seems to have been hurt,” an eyewitness told Gulf News on Friday.

There was no official communication on the fire that led to rumours, especially on social media and local forums.

Rumours were rife that an alleged Dragon Gang was behind the fire. However, an activist denied that there was any arson act. "It must be an accident there’s has been no act of arson,” the activist told Gulf News on condition of anonymity.

Meanwhile, the presence of security agencies around Sohar was conspicuous but there were no attempts to take out rallies after Friday prayers.

“We had decided not to protest today, but we are planning another demonstration on July 22,” he added.
