Muscat: Despite repeated warnings of rough waves from authorities, two Omanis on Thursday night

set off on a fishing trip in the Sea of Oman, in the Abu Abali area of Mussanah province, according to their families. They have been missing ever since.

Rescue and search operations are on, an official at the Royal Oman Police (ROP) told Gulf News.

The official added that rough waves make it harder for the rescue team to search for them. However, ROP Coast Guards and Oman’s Royal Navy vessels are still looking, said the official.

Oman’s police aviation and Royal Air force have also deployed helicopters.

Last January, Two Omani fishermen who went missing in the Sea of Oman were safely brought ashore by rescue teams. The two brothers, residents of Al Aqar village in the Shinas province, went on a fishing trip and found themselves stranded at sea after their boat’s engine failed.

Last May, the ROP rescued two brothers in Sur province who had gone missing at sea under similar circumstances.

Around 20,000 Omanis work in the fishing sector in Oman, according to Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries figures.
