Muscat: Two people have lost their lives in the heavy rains that have hit Oman for the past three days.

An eight-year-old child died after he fell into a drain on Sunday in Dima wa Tayeen province, in the country’s east, according to the Public Authority for Civil Defence and Ambulance (PACDA). The victim was later was found by his family and taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Also, a Pakistani national died after being electrocuted in the northern Ibri province, after an electric pole fell on him on Sunday. The victim tried to remove the wires using his hands, which resulted in his instant death, according to PACDA.

The authority also received more than 5,000 calls related to the weather conditions.

Thirty two people trapped in flooded wadis across the country were rescued by PACDA, including three Emiratis in Dibba province of Musandam region.

The heavy rain caused traffic snarls, cut electricity supplies to several areas and caused damage to property across the country.

Many roads that linking northern provinces were flooded.

The latest satellite imagery and weather charts revealed the depression was likely to continue until Tuesday. Many parts of Musandam region were covered by snow on Sunday, in images that went viral on social media.

A picture of Omani police officer rescuing an Omani family in Shinas province went viral on social media during the rains. Social media users thanked him for his action, calling him “the hero”.

A video of an expatriate worker using a heavy truck to rescue an Omani family in a flooded area in Sohar province was also extensively shared on social media platforms.
