Muscat: Criminal Investigation Department officers at the Royal Oman Police (ROP) arrested two people for stealing a vehicle from the used car showroom in Wattayeh area on Sunday.

According to an ROP press release, the accused posed as customers to buy a vehicle from the used car showroom. “They took the vehicle for a test drive and copied the car keys before returning the vehicle,” a spokesman for the ROP said, adding that the two refused to close the deal on the pretext of the vehicle’s high price.

“The accused returned later and stole the vehicle using the duplicate keys they had made when they took the car for a test run,,” he said, adding that the used car showroom staff alerted the police, who tracked down the accused and arrested them.

“We would advise everyone, including used car showroom staff, to be careful when they show used vehicles for sale. They should never leave the vehicle in any stranger’s possession even for a minute,” he added.

The police also issued a stern warning to key makers to strictly follow the guidelines laid out for them while making duplicate keys. “They must take all personal details of the person making a duplicate key,” he advised.
