Muscat: Residents of Oman have reported sensing a tremor in the early hours on Wednesday when southwestern Pakistan and parts of India experienced an earthquake.

The seismological stations at the Sultan Qaboos University's Earthquake Monitoring Centre recorded the earthquake, which measured 7.2 on the Richter scale at 00.23 hours Oman time.

Dr. Issa Al Hussain, Director of the Centre confirmed that several dwellers from Quriat, Jalan in eastern parts of Oman and some from Al Khuwair district in Muscat reported that they sensed tremors after midnight.

He clarified that such distant tremors, if strong in magnitude, could be felt under certain geological conditions, especially during the stillness of night by those who live in multi-storeyed buildings.

"The tremor occurred in Pakistan should not cause damage to buildings and other properties in Oman," Dr. Issa stressed.

Through a network of thirteen seismic stations, at various locations across the Sultanate, the Earthquake Monitoring Centre is capable of registering and measuring shockwaves of all sizes.

The Pakistan earthquake struck with its epicentre around 50 kilometres west of the town of Dalbandin, close to the border with Afghanistan. The tremor was sensed in Oman along the coastal belt between Muscat and Jalan in addition to Musandam.
