Muscat: An earthquake of magnitude 5.9 on the Richter scale was recorded on Monday morning off Oman’s southern region, according to a statement issued by the Sultan Qaboos University Earthquake Monitoring Centre.

According to the statement, carried by Oman News Agency, the earthquake was recorded outside of the Sultanate’s lands, South East of Salalah city on the fracture of the Gulf of Aden.

The statement further pointed out that the earthquake took place at 7.36am local time and that the area is a known active earthquake area. The epicentre of the earthquake was 270km away from Salalah and 1,115km south of Muscat.

“The earthquake is far enough from the Sultanate’s lands and the seismic wave will be close to its core but with less power,” the statement said.

The centre reiterated that the earthquake had no impact on the buildings and installations in the area.
