Muscat: Muscat Primary Court on Wednesday sentenced three youngsters to one-year in prison each for being involved in an obscene video. The court also slapped them with a fine of 1,000 riyals.

Last February, a video clip that went viral on social media platforms showed two teenagers, a boy and a girl, in what was deemed an immoral act. The video was recorded by the boy who later sent it to his friend, the third accused.

The third accused leaked the video to his friends via WhatsApp, which sparked controversy among conservatives in the country.

Last November, an Omani was found guilty of posting revealing pictures of his girlfriend on Instagram and was sentenced to one month in jail and fined 2,000 riyals, half of which his ex-girlfriend would receive in compensation.

The man posted the pictures to take revenge on his girlfriend after they had a fight.

Article 16 of Oman’s cyber law stipulates that anyone who publishes news or pictures of someone’s private life can be jailed and fined.
