Muscat: The second ship within four days has been hijacked by Somalian pirates off the coast of Oman.

Yesterday morning, the Liberian flagged, Greek owned, Eleni P was reported to have been hijacked 402 kilometres off the coast of Oman, according to the European Union Naval Force (EU NAVFOR), who are patrolling the waters in and around Somalia .

The bulk carrier with a crew of 26 (23 Filipinos, two Romanian and one Indian) was en route to Kandla in India when it was seized by pirates.

The EU NAVFOR, who are monitoring the situation, reported that crew are safe.

Last Saturday, Somalian pirates took hostage a German-operated chemical tanker, 193 kilometres south of Salalah in southern Oman. "A Marshal Island flagged, German owned, Chemical tanker the Marida Marguerite, of 13,000 tonnes was taken by pirates," said an email message sent to Gulf News from the EU NAVFOR.

According to a spokesperson from the Force, the ship was approached by a pirate skiff firing automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades, the crew said they saw the pirates climbing onboard.
