Muscat: The recent snowfalls in the mountains of Oman have not proved to be much of an attraction, with few residents venturing out to Jebel Akdhar (Green Mountain) in the north-eastern region of the country.

"It was a sunny day but deep inside the mountains a little snow was left and we enjoyed the spectacle for the first time in Oman," Indian expatriate Ranjana Sharma told Gulf News.

She said that at night the temperature fell as low as
-6 degrees Celsius.

'Thrilling'

"It was freezing but all the same a thrilling experience in Oman," said the long-time resident. Her two daughters, Shaivya and Maninee, made the most of the trip by playing in what little snow was left.

The family shared their pictures with Gulf News.

"There was no mad rush of people to see snow although it was a weekend," her husband Sudharkar said, adding that rooms were available in the hotel at the top of Jebel Akdhar, which is about 200 kilometres from the capital.

Jebel Akdhar and Jebel Shams (which means 'Mountain of the Sun' in Arabic) received snow last week as the mercury plummeted in Oman and the country shivered in its coldest winter in a long time.

In recent days, sunshine has helped bring warmth to the freezing populace.
