Muscat: Six people died in three separate road accidents in Oman this week.

Two Indian nationals were among three of the people killed in a freak incident, involving five vehicles on the main highway in Birka, about 100-kilometres north of Muscat.

According to a spokesperson for the Royal Oman Police (ROP), the two Indian men died on the spot when the driver of a three-tonne truck, travelling in the direction of Muscat lost control after a tyre burst.

The truck hit the road divider of the four-lane highway and was thrown to the other side of the road, where it crashed into five on-coming vehicles.

The accident triggered a huge traffic jam that trailed on for kilometres on both sides.

This was the second fatal accident in just two days, in which a faulty tyre burst. Last Tuesday, two people died in the eastern region of the country when their car rolled over because of a burst tyre.

In another accident on Tuesday, two teenage Omani motorcycle riders were killed on the spot when a heavy vehicle hit them from behind in Amerat, on the outskirts of Muscat.

And a 21-year-old motorcyclist died when he collided head-on with another vehicle in Sohar last Tuesday.

Police have again urged drivers to maintain vehicles properly and adhere to the speed limit.
