Muscat: With the Royal Oman Police (ROP) relentlessly pursuing drug traffickers and addicts, the Shura Council in the country also took up the issue that has plagued the society in recent years.

The police in recent times have seized a big haul of drug consignments, mostly heroin, Tramadol tablets and hashish as well as khat in southern parts of the country.

The police believe that the infiltrators are mainly responsible for spreading the menace of drugs by trafficking in them.

This month, ROP’s Anti-narcotics Unit seized 15 kilograms of heroin with a street value of over a million dollars. In the last two months the police have also busted drug traffickers with links to international drug gangs.

Meanwhile, worried at the increasing use of drugs, the Shura Office on Monday discussed the implications of drug addiction and trading on the true values of Omani society and its dangerous effects on the younger generation and internal security.

The Shura decided to entrust the Defence, Security and Foreign Relations Committee with the task of studying this issue and preparing a comprehensive report on it, according to a report by Oman News Agency.
