Muscat: Relations between India and Oman are going from strength to strength, as trade increases, according to the Ambassador to Oman, Anil Wadhwa.

The diplomat was addressing a gathering, at a ceremony held at the Indian embassy premises in Muscat on Sunday, as the Indian community celebrated the country’s 64th Independence Day.

He also revealed that trade between India and Oman had risen to $3.3 billion (Dh12.1188 billion) in 2009, from $2 billion (Dh7.34472 billion) in 2008.

"There are now 1,537 Indo-Omani joint ventures in Oman with an investment of $7billion, of which Indian parties have invested $4.3 billion. Oman has invested close $3 billion in India," he added.

Wadhwa hoisted the Indian National Flag and read out the Indian president's address at the ceremony, which was attended by more than 500 members of the Indian community.

The ambassador later visited the Indian School in Muscat where around 800 members of the Indian community had gathered. Pupils performed the national anthem, as well as patriotic songs, in honour of the day.

Wadhwa highlighted the achievements of Indian schools in the region and thanked the Omani authorities for their support and cooperation.
