Muscat: The Omani Ministry of Transport and Communication has affirmed that Salalah Airport was breached by water from heavy rain that lashed Dhofar province on Wednesday.

Pictures and videos of the leakage went viral in social media platforms and showed the rainwater leaking from the airport’s ceiling and flooding the terminal.

The ministry immediately issued a statement about the incident, stressing that it has formed a team to investigate the incident and fix the problem.

“The initial contractor’s report showed that gutters of the roof were clogged and they are being cleaned,” said the statement.

The ministry affirmed that the project is still under the guarantee of the contractor who will be held responsible for anything wrong in the airport. The Oman’s Salalah Airport was officially inaugurated in November 2015.

It started operations on June 15.

The new airport boasts state-of-the-art facilities and equipment that place it among the most modern airports in the world.

The passenger terminal is spread over 65,000 square metres and will serve over two million travellers a year during the first stage. The main runway is 4km long and 75 metres wide and can receive the largest aeroplanes including the A380.

The airport also boasts the latest air navigation technology including auto-landing devices besides retail stores, restaurants and other facilities. It also boasts a VIP lounge and a car parking area that can accommodate 2,200 vehicles, including VIP and taxi parking lots.
