Muscat: Oman’s Sultan Qaboos Bin Saeed will fly to Germany on Sunday for a periodical medical test, according to a statement from the Diwan Royal Court.

The trip will last for a limited period of time, added the statement.

Sultan Qaboos had undergone an eight-month medical treatment in Germany in July 2014. He returned to the country in March last year.

During that period Sultan Qaboos had reassured citizens about his health in a video address from Germany. In the video address carried on state news channel Oman TV, the sultan greeted citizens on the country’s 44th National Day on November 18, 2014, and expressed regret for not being able to be present during celebrations.

He praised the people for their support and the Omani armed forces for their role in the country.

Omanis celebrated Sultan Qaboos’ return in March by taking to the streets, performing group prayers, and slaughtering cattle for charity as a mark of thanks.

State television showed Qaboos’s arrival, walking off the plane unaided along a red carpet before being lifted onto a helicopter to Bait Al Barakah palace in Seeb province.

Social media was abuzz with the sultan’s return, circulating news from Muscat International Airport, which went viral. Nationals also launched a hashtag on Twitter “Be happy! Qaboos has arrived”.

In his four decades as ruler, Sultan Qaboos transformed the small oil exporter into a prosperous state, earning a reputation as a mediator seeking to ease periodic tensions between non-Arab Iran and Gulf Arab states.
