Muscat:  Sultan Qaboos Bin Saeed has issued orders, granting monthly 150 Omani riyals (about Dh1,500) to those job seekers who have registered with the Ministry of Manpower until a suitable employment is found for them, according to a report by Oman News Agency.

The Sultan also issued orders for creation of 50,000 new jobs for the Omani citizens, the news agency said.

In the recent past, Oman has seen protests by citizens in Muscat, Salalah and Sohar with people demanding more salaries, more jobs and control of rising prices.

The protests that started last on Friday in Sohar turned violent on Sunday and police had to use force to quell protesters turning violent and vandalising public as well as private properties.

As the police used teargas, one person was reported dead and several injured, including security men.

Meanwhile, the Sultan has sent Syed Ali Bin Hamoud Al Busaidi, Minister of the Diwan Royal Court, to Sohar to meet with the protesters and listen to their grievances, according to a report by Oman News Agency.

A statement issued by ONA said that the Omani monarch was keen to achieve prosperity for the citizens of the country.

The Sultan has also ordered formation of a ministerial committee to study possibility of granting more powers to the Shura Council.
